Lawrence Academy is governed by a Board of Trustees which adheres to the principles of good governance designed by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). The Board of Trustees does not interfere in the daily affairs of the school, but instead focuses on four areas of critical importance to independent schools: it supports the Head of School, to whom it delegates authority to manage the school; it develops policies that guide the Head in running the school; it protects the independence of the school; and it is accountable for the financial well-being of the school. The Board of Trustees is not responsible for the daily administration of the school, including hiring and supervision of faculty and staff, admission of students, or designing curriculum, which is the responsibility of the Head of School.
The Board is comprised of no more than fifteen members who may be community members, alumni, or parents. Members are elected by the current Board for three year terms, and may serve two consecutive terms.
